Calderstone’s Park Nature Reserve - Planting on Concrete.
Forb’s Concept Design, Specifications, Project Oversight and Planting Design transformed a barren expanse of concrete into a whole new area of a Nature Reserve.
Objective.
To transform 350m2 of reinforced concrete so that it contributed to the Nature Reserve, both for people and wildlife.
Forb Solution.
This was an exceptionally challenging space with budget constraints limiting excavation options. The solution hinged on selective excavation of a number of tree pits and a pond, providing material that serves as the planting substrate. The trees give height and shade; the planting is drought tolerant, likes low fertility and has been selected so there is food and habitat year round to bolster the Nature Reserve’s biodiversity. Stones excavated were reused either as features or as gabion filling material to create seating. Sandbags are a cost effective edging solution.
Outcomes.
9 more trees, 1600 more plants, new paths, new seating, new habitat and food sources. Highly sustainable transformation: no material was sent to landfill; negated the need for 200 Tonnes of top soil and 20T of stone that more traditional solutions would have required. Planting and management performed with the fantastic Friends of Harthill and Calderstones Park volunteers.
